Granting of Important US Patent

Sunshine Heart is pleased to report that the US Patent Office has granted its patent application entitled "A Fluid Pressure Generating Means" as US Patent 7,306,558. This patent provides the Company with broad patent coverage for a fully implanted heart assist driver of novel design that is particularly well suited to the next generation of C-PulseT heart assist therapy.


Crispin Marsh, Director of Sunshine Heart and a patent attorney, commented "Sunshine Heart includes among its goals for 2008, the advancement of the development of a fully implantable C-Pulse. A fully implantable C-Pulse will provide greater patient convenience while preserving the benefits of "non blood contact" shown by the present C-Pulse. The granted patent provides the Company with broad patent coverage for a highly advantageous design of a driver for the new generation of C-Pulse heart assist therapy". He continued "This is another example of Sunshine''s Heart''s program of research leading to design breakthroughs which can be patented. Such patents provide the Company with a lengthy period of exclusivity for leading edge products incorporating its designs. It is this portfolio of patents which underpin the Company''s ability to reap significant financial reward from the necessarily long and expensive process of commercialising C-Pulse heart assist therapy".
